Socitm is a membership organisation running professional and commercial activities. It was founded in 1986 as the professional association for ICT managers working in and for the public sector.
In October 2008, Socitm members voted, at an Extraordinary General Meeting, to change its membership model so that it would be able to:
- support professional development of all people working in public and third sector ICT at all stages of their career
- put members from the private sector on an equal footing to those from the public sector
- explicitly benefit employing organisations as well as individual ICT professionals
The organisation is now open to all who work in ICT in or for the public and third sectors and operates on a ‘one person, one vote’ basis.
Work is now underway to develop membership categories for organisations, and pilots are
planned in 2009. In the public sector, organisational membership will enable any eligible
employee (confirmed by the Head of ICT with reference to the SFIA model) to enjoy full
membership benefits. In the private sector, bespoke partnership packages will be negotiated.
Socitm members are currently drawn primarily from local authorities, the police and fire services, housing authorities and other locally delivered public services. From 2009, Socitm will develop its membership offer to become attractive to ICT and related professionals across the public sector.
Managers or consultants from organisations supplying ICT products and services to the public sector, or which support public services in other ways, are also welcomed as members.
With around 1700 members from 550 different organisations including 98% of all UK local authorities, Socitm provides a widely respected forum for the promotion, use and development of ICT best practice. It is also playing a leading role in ICT-facilitated local government transformation in the UK.
